Potassium sulfate (SOP), a premium, chloride-free potash source preferred for chloride-sensitive crops (tobacco, fruits, vegetables, potatoes), is produced via several distinct routes with different sensitivities to MOP pricing. The Mannheim process, the most widely used synthetic route, reacts MOP directly with concentrated sulfuric acid in a furnace to yield SOP and hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a co-product; its economics are therefore directly linked to both MOP and sulfuric acid/sulfur costs, making Mannheim-route SOP producers the most exposed to potash price volatility.
